3 Fun Spring Activities for Kansas City Seniors

Kansas City is a thriving city that’s perfect for seniors looking to make the most of their retirement years. The city boasts plenty of year-round opportunities for older adults to stay active and entertained, but the spring is a particularly great time of year to get out and enjoy all the city has to offer. As the weather warms up, here are three great day trips for seniors in Kansas City to consider in the coming months.

Visit The Shops of Prairie Village

A popular destination for seniors, the Shops of Prairie Village offers both boutique retail experiences and delicious dining options. This outdoor shopping center features a variety of stores with eclectic clothing choices, specialty foods and even pet supplies. With its easily walkable design, ample outdoor seating and beautiful landscaping, the Shops offers a charming atmosphere for guests of all ages.

After browsing the shops, be sure to grab a bite to eat at one of the many nearby restaurants. Various styles of cuisine are available depending on your mood. You’ll find plenty of sweet treats for dessert, as well!

The Shops of Prairie Village also hosts many different events throughout the year. As the weather gets warmer, the local farmers markets are a great way to spend a morning.

Explore the Johnson County Museum

For seniors who love history, the Johnson County Museum offers a look back into the area’s past. Here, you’ll find exhibits that cover everything from the early days of settlement in the area to present day. The museum’s signature exhibition includes “The 1950s All-Electric House,” a look back at mid-20th century American life.

In addition to permanent exhibits, the Johnson County Museum also hosts changing exhibits in its other on-site gallery. These exhibits complement the primary exhibit by digging deeper into the different topics explored there. Past exhibitions include “Return to Oz,” “The Turbulent Twenties” and “Coney Island.”

Attend the Prairie Village Art Walk

For seniors who enjoy art, the Prairie Village Art Walk offers a great way to support local artists and get some exercise at the same time. Taking place in April, this event includes paintings, sculptures and other forms of art all along the streets of Prairie Village. Many of the artists involved are also on hand to discuss their works and answer questions for inquiring minds.

The PV Art Walk is one of several art initiatives of The Prairie Village Arts Council, a volunteer committee that works with The Prairie Village Municipal Foundation to encourage cultural awareness and local development in and around the City of Prairie Village. In addition to the Art Walk, the Council hosts additional monthly and yearly gallery exhibitions, as well.
